Beginner Woodworking Tips

For many people, woodworking is all about building practical everyday items, such as cabinets, bookcases, or tables.  People see quality, solid wood construction as a beautiful alternative to the plastic or cheap particle board products they find in the stores.

However, to the great majority of us hobbyists woodworking is more than just making a nice item- it is relaxing, diverting hobby that can take us away from our everyday problems.  All of us, even those of us who are retired, find there are not enough hours in the day to attend to all the necessary things that need to be done.  The fact that we are willing to devote so many hours to this hobby tells you something - the experience of woodworking is at least as much satisfaction as the end product.

Our world seems to be constantly rushing through life.  Well, you can rush through a lot of things, but not a woodworking project.  There's an old saying in woodworking: "Measure twice, cut once".  It's as true today as it was hundreds of years ago.  Any project you make will be less expensive than a store-bought version of the same item, but the raw materials still aren't inexpensive, and one single rushed cut can wipe out any savings.  Patience is definitely a virtue in woodworking.

Aside from the cost factor, there's an even more important reason to take it slow - safety.  Whether you use power tools or exclusively use hand tools, they can be dangerous when your attention wanders.  An intense focus on what you are doing not only increases your safety, but also your enjoyment.

I believe that the reason so many men take up woodworking well into their adult years is because of this need for focus.  To take your mind away from the issues of the day, to intensely focus on the details of your project, is a tremendous way to unwind and relax.  For a few hours, nothing exists except you and the wood.

So, whether you are an old hand at woodworking or just a beginner, look around and see if you can't learn something new from this site.  With patience and perseverance, you can pick up skills (and build some treasured, hand-crafted items) that will last your lifetime.
